Global News - August 12, 2015: Fourteen internationally-trained doctors are fanning out across British Columbia as part of a program to provide better primary health care in rural areas. A release from the Ministry of Health says all 14 doctors will work as family physicians in a total of 11 communities, and each has pledged to remain in the same community for at least three years. CTV News Vancouver Island - July 21, 2015: A veteran doctor says a shortage of physicians in Victoria is so bad that some clinics are being forced to close during scheduled hours. Maple Ridge News - July 23, 2015: A new website has been created to help residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows find a family doctor. A GP for Me is a program that has been recruiting doctors to live in the community. Run by the Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice, it is now helping those doctors to attract patients. April 20, 2015 - Star 98.3: A new initiative launched by the Abbotsford Division of Family Practice will hopefully make things easier for people looking to get time with a physician. Right now in Abbotsford there are over 5000 people looking for a family doctor, while at the same time over 50 physicians who have patient openings. Read the full story

Long-time family doctor William Cavers says demand from patients is skyrocketing at a time when general practitioners are in short supply. “People are desperate,” Cavers said. “There’s a lot of people out there with ongoing health concerns who can’t get a family doctor and are seeking their care through walk-in clinics and through the emergency department.” The diagnosis is so grim that some over-run walk-in clinics are having trouble providing service, he said.
